Todos Santos retains a “genuine Mexico” flavor that invites you to slow down and relax. The people are friendly and the streets uncrowded except when yearly festivals bring art , architecture or surfing aficionados to town! The diverse features of excellent art galleries, world class waves, and innovative housing design are only part of the draw to Todos Santos, however.
Today’s Todos Santos is about the people. Both Mexican and expatriate residents are working together to create a warm and welcoming Mexican town in a sustainable fashion that includes improvements in education, civic events, updated infrastructure, modern health and wellness facilities and increased economic opportunity for all. It is not uncommon to see fundraising events for children’s activities, the local library and other community projects.
As of May 19, 2006 Todos Santos was added to Mexico’s list of Pueblos Magicos (Magical Towns). This designation allows for matching state and federal funding for architectural renovations and infrastructure improvements.
The current Pueblos Mágicos are Taxco, Guerrero; Tepoztlán, Morelos; Tepotzotlán, State of Mexico; Huasca, Hidalgo; San Miguel de Allende and Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato; Real de Catorce, San Luis Potosí; Mexcaltitlán, Nayarit; Cuetzalan, Puebla; Tequila and Tapalpa, Jalisco; Comalá, Colima; Pátzcuaro, Michoacán; Izamal, Yucatán; and San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas.
To encourage visitors to Todos Santos, the community has created some of the best eating establishments on the Cape, including international cuisines as well as perfected local dishes. The many lodging opportunities in town range from the classic and formal to whimsical and artsy, featuring lush gardens and comfortable outdoor living areas.
The community also offers cultural events and celebrations that begin with the town fiesta in October and continue through April. Shopping, whether for fine art or local crafts, is in itself a cultural experience. Yoga, Tai Chi, Qigong, meditation and other internal practices are available in town. There are many outdoor activities as well, and eco-tourism is growing. Miles of nearly deserted beaches stretch along the Pacific, providing a view of the pods of whales on their way to breed and give birth. The town’s residents are environmentally minded and help protect the fragile ecosystems that surround the village. |
